So let's say you are thinking about taking my advice and taking a lesson. Or have even thought once or twice of actually taking up the game. Then you take a look in the mirror and say, 'Oh I can't play golf. I'm (fill in the blank). No matter how you filled in that blank, you are wrong.
This is John Daly. He stand 5' 11".
This is Ian Woosnam. He stands 5' 5".
This is Laura Davies. She stands 5' 10".
This is Jeong Jang. She stands 5'
These are all excellent golfers, playing on tour. It doesn't matter where you fall on the height/weight continuum, you can play golf. They put clubs in the hands of kids as young as 2 ( Tiger Woods anyone? ) and people in their 80's and 90's still play. It doesn't matter how old you are, you can play golf. And look here. These are the official rules for disabled golfers. Because even if you are disabled, you can play golf.
Golf is the great equalizer sport. That is why there are blue, gold, white, red and green tees. That is why each golfer carries a handicap. That is why there are rules for disabled golfers. The field is leveled. So the 65 year old grandma can still beat her 20 year old grandson. And the 40ish, 'well filled out' dad can spend 4+ hours enjoying the company of his 13 year old daughter. And the golfer in the wheelchair can tee it up on the first hole with the 6' ex-Marine, and there is a good chance the ex-Marine will be buying the drinks at the end of the round.
You don't have to be under 30, or have started playing when you were 8. And you certainly don't have to be a great athlete. And remember, the only person you are really playing against is yourself. So just erase whatever you filled in that blank, stop looking in the mirror, and go play.
